Tschuggen Bergoase at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel

The history of the Tschuggen Grand Hotel began in 1883 when Otto Herwig, a German from Hanau on the river Main, came to Arosa to recover from a lung condition. Convinced of the therapeutic effects of Arosa’s mountain air, he soon founded the Berghilf Sanatorium together with his sister Marie, who took over the running of the institution in 1892 and managed it until 1922.

For the 1929/1930 winter season the Berghilf Sanatorium for lung patients – most of whom were in residence during the summer months – transformed itself into the Tschuggen Grand Hotel for winter sports enthusiasts. This metamorphosis proved exemplary for the development of tourism as a whole in Arosa. From the refuge for bronchial sufferers and those escaping the heat of the towns and cities, Arosa became the winter and summer sports paradise for which it is famous today, i.e. with fresh-air guaranteed!

The construction of the Tschuggen Bergoase spa facility and the remodelling of the entire infrastructure began in the 2004 with the expert guidance of the internationally renowned Swiss architects Mario Botta and Carlo Rampazzi. The commissioning of the hotel’s very own mountain railway, the Tschuggen Express, is a world premiere.

The site chosen for building the new Tschuggen Bergoase facility next to the Tschuggen Grand Hotel is part of the open space at the foot of the mountains. The aim was to build without over-building. While the volumes of the functional premises disappear into the mountain, recurring elements (leaves, trees and skylights with their distinctive geometry) bear witness to the presence of the new.

The 5000 m² Tschuggen Bergoase spa and wellness facility spreads over four floors, with an impressive array of saunas and steam baths, treatment rooms, lounge and fire place, fitness area and Medical Wellness.

One of the highlights at the Tschuggen Bergoase are Spa Suites “Muscida” and “Polaris” offering entirely private and memorable luxury. In addition to the whirlpool, steam bath and sauna, guests are also able to book individual beauty or massage treatments. Personalized menu and diets are tailored to the guest’s needs, providing complete relaxation in the beautiful ambience beneath the starry sky.
